On the night of April 23, 1979, during Marine Amphibious Ready Group (MARG) operations off the coast of Pian di Spille , Italy, a mechanical malfunction on one of the Marine Tracked Landing Vehicles (LVT), operating from LST-1197, required a recovery operation to have that LVT towed back to the ship for repairs. Sadly, the heavy seas being experienced in the area at that time, caused the LVT to founder as it was being towed. This accident resulted in the tragic loss of four of the 22 Navy and Marine personnel that were aboard the LVT at the time it was being towed.

This page is dedicated to these four brave young men who gave their lives in the service and protection of their country.
