USS BARNSTABLE COUNTY (LST-1197) was commissioned on May 27, 1972 at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard in Long Beach, California. Crewmen that came aboard after the ship returned to its homeport at Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Little Creek, VA, were given a "Shipboard Orientation" booklet.
