The USS BARNSTABLE COUNTY (LST-1197) was decommissioned on June 29, 1994 at the Naval Amphibious Base in Little Creek, Virginia. At that time, she was turned over to the Spanish Navy and was renamed the HERNAN CORTEZ (L41). The following year, the USS HARLAN COUNTY (LST-1196) was also decommissioned and turned over to the Spanish Navy as the PIZARRO (L42).

The bronze plaque that was mounted on the bulkhead of the Barnstable County's main (starboard) quarterdeck. This plaque was donated to the County of Barnstable after the ship's decommissioning and is currently hanging proudly on a wall in the County Commissioners Office.

The quote from Daniel Webster reads, "God grants liberty only to those who love it, are always ready to guard and defend it."
