USS Barnstable County set a precedent in 1987 by being the first to embark Midshipmen during the West African Training Cruise. For one month, MIDN 1/C Gizenski, MIDN 1/C Flick and MIDN 1/C Aguilar participated in all shipboard evolutions including bridge watches, engineering watches, shipboard management and even as crewmen of the amphibious assault vehicles embarked by MARDET UNITAS. These midshipmen, in their final year at the United States Naval Acadamy (USNA) and The Citadel, participated in a valuable introduction to the fleet as crew of the USS Barnstable County.

These distingquished visitors often included members of the United States Diplocmatic Corps, Foreign Government Officials and high-ranking military leaders. A job well done!
