Monrovia Canyon Park - Big Leaf Maple

(Acer macrophyllum)

Large "palmate" (palm-like) leaves of a Big Leaf Maple in Monrovia Canyon. The leaves of this deciduous tree turn bright yellow in the Fall before dropping to the ground. This tree closely resemble the Western Sycamore, that also grows in the Park, but can be easily distinguished by its bark which is rougher and darker than smooth light-patchy bark of the Sycamore. Also, the seeds of the Big Leaf Maple are winged and the Sycamore's are contained in spikey balls. Click on photo for more information.
