Monrovia Canyon Park - Sugar Bush

(Rhus ovata)

This member of the Sumac Family (Anacardiaceae) is a large evergreen shrub with its shiney, thick, bright green leaves folded in the middle, resembling taco shells. The reddish structures in the center of the leaf clusters are flowerbuds that will bloom in April and May. This plant closely resembles the Lemonadeberry, another member of the Sumac Family.
