USS BonHomme Richard (LHD-6)
Tiger Cruise 2003

On September 12, 2003, it was my privilege to be one of the approximately 190 "Tigers" (civilian guests) invited aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) for a 4 day "Tiger Cruise" from San Fancisco, CA to the ship's home port of San Diego, CA. My sponsor was AG2 Cory Wittman, whose father, David, and I were "Plank Owners" aboard the now decommissioned USS Barnstable County (LST-1197).

The minute I crossed the Quarterdeck of the BHR, smelled the paint and diesel fuel, heard the blaring of the 1MC, it was an immediate flashback to 1975 when I was a QM2 aboard LST-1197. All the crew were the most gracious of hosts; putting up with all our questions, finding us when we got lost inside the ship and above all demonstrating to us Tigers, what outstanding people we have in our Navy today.

To Capt Berg-Johnson, the CO of the USS BonHomme Richard, and all the men and women of his crew, a hearty and much deserved "Bravo Zulu" for giving a former Navy man a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It was 4 days I will never forget.
