Monrovia Canyon Park - Acorn Woodpeckers

(Melanerpes formicivorus)

A pair of Acorn Woodpeckers on the trunk of a Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia), with a male Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna), hovering in the background. The bird on the right is the male because his red "cap" touches the white forehead. The female has a black band separating the red cap from the white forehead. These communal birds are seen in and around Monrovia Canyon Park where Live Oak Trees are growing. Click on the photo for more info.
