This is a photo of the restored "Ramada" (i.e., ".. an open-air, covered structure") you will find at Inspiration Point, located about 2 miles above the Echo Mountain Resort ruins at an elevation of 4,520 feet. If you look closely, you can see the viewing tubes  arranged along the lower tier. Since this picture was taken, the roof over the Ramada was completed so it now looks somewhat different than it appears here (see second photo below). Informational plaques have also been installed at the site showing what it looked like when it was first built.

Basic Hike Info:

Topo Maps: Pasadena and Mt. Wilson. For a printable Castle Canyon/Sam Merrill Trail topo map, click here.
Season: Anytime of the year but early Spring is the best.
Distance: 4.25 Miles, 1,013 ft net Elevation Gain.

To reach the Inspiration Point Ramada, you take the Castle Canyon Trail, which starts right as you reach the Echo Mountain site (Look for Trail Marker). It is approximately 2 miles to the Ramada. The first mile of this trail is fairly easy and level then you hit a series of switchbacks and the grade/difficulty of the trail increases. After reaching the Ramada, you can either head back down Castle Canyon Trail or head north on the truck trail for a few hundred yards until, on the left, you come to the Sam Merrill Trail sign.

Taking this route, around Inspiration Point and down the Sam Merrill Trail to Echo Mountain is about 2.5 miles and will add about 4.25 miles (and at least 3 hrs) to the total Echo Moutain hike. Therefore, make sure you have sufficient time, food and water before attempting this hike. Also, in the Spring and late Fall, it can get cold and windy at Inspiration Point even when its fairly warm at Echo Mountain, so pack the appropriate outer-wear, at least a good wind-breaker and gloves.

Some people opt for the "clockwise" loop, going up the Sam Merrill Trail, around Inspiration Point to the Ramada, then down the Castle Canyon Trail back to the Echo Mountain Ruins.

Below is a more recent (April '99) photo of the restored Inspiration Point Ramada. You can see the roof that now covers the site and also notice the snow (about 3 inches) that blanketed the area when this picture was taken. Click here for another view of the Ramada from the Echo Mountain Ruins.

The junction of the Castle Canyon Trail with the Sam Merrill Trail can be seen on the right hand side, just to the left of those double pine trees.
